New RZG April indexes still highlight key players

In the April 2025 index update, the SingleStep method was introduced in the German breeding value system 'RZG'. From now on, indexes of the Holstein and Red Holstein breeds are calculated using this single-step approach. Despite these changes and the basic adjustments, there are still consistent frontrunners among both the young genomic bulls and daughter proven sires compared to December.

Proof run of 4-2025

Young Bulls
The frontrunner from December 2024, Pennywise (Picard x Nexus), continues to lead with a gRZG of 165 (+4 from December) and a gRZ€ of 3291. He provides +0.44% fat and +0.13% protein and transmits solid overall type, significantly feet & leg improver with 124FUN. Pennywise comes from the German WEH Jessica cow family and is owned by Synetics. In second place is newcomer Rise Up (one of the first Real Syn sons) with a gRZG of 164. He has quickly made a name for himself at the German KI BG Wölsau. HM Pirelli has risen six places to third compared to december showing a gRZG of 159. Bred by Henk Moonen from the HM Pirella RDC line (Golden-Oaks Mark Prudence family), he has yet to have semen widely available but is already gaining traction as a sire of sons in the Netherlands and Germany.Another sire of sons Argentum (Arizona x Vitality) is also improving by being placed 4th in the lists. Vino P RDC, the top polled and red carring bull, debuts in seventh with a gRZG of 162, and is the highest-ranked Vivivy son in the top 100. PrismaGen Silvanus PP (Strong P x Freewood P) is the highest 'PP-er' in 30th place.

The German market is clearly leading in polled breeding, as evidenced by the Red Holstein top list, which is now almost entirely populated by heterozygous and homozygous polled bulls. For instance, the number one bull as of December 2025, Malaga Red (161 gRZG 4-2025), has been surpassed by newcomer Cardiff P, a Can PP RDC son with a gRZG of 162 and a gRZ€ of 3107. Cardiff P belongs to the same cow family as proven bulls Broeks Freemax and Thurler RUW Cover. With just a one-point difference, Cardiff P outperformed Tirsvad 3STAR Member PP Red son, Maksim P Red. He experienced an increase of +9 in his total index and climbed 10 positions on the list, establishing himself as one of the biggest climbers among young Red Holstein bulls. Additionally, he is the highest type sire in the top 20, transmittin 132 gRZE. In third place is Schach (161 gRZG), a Skat P RDC son who rose from 10th place in December to 3rd place in April. The number two bull from December, Solar P (Sirius P Red x Freestyle), has dropped to 6th place with a gRZG of 158. Meanwhile, Mean PP, with a gRZG of 157, is in eighth position and is the highest homozygous polled sire on the list.
